Update from Our Panua Intern, Katie Cornelius

With one year passing I got onto the airplane knowing this year has brought change to my life. Within the 365 days since I last lived in Naivasha, Kenya I completed my senior year and graduated from the University of Florida, I turned 22 years old, I spent countless hours working with children in the hospital, I took the MCAT, I applied to medical school, I fundraised and attended my last Dance Marathon at the University of Florida with the sweet Miracle Children, I finished my term as President of my sorority, I was inducted into Florida Blue Key, and I finished out my college years, ready to move on to a new phase in my life and continue serving the Lord. While this past year has brought extraordinary change, accomplishment, and adjustment, I prepared my heart knowing that God would be sending me to a place where the change, adjustment, and growth in my life would be far beyond measurable.

Last year, I had the privilege of living in Naivasha, Kenya working with the Panua Partners in Hope program for 2 months. I went to Naivasha feeling strong in my faith, yet God knew I had so much room for growth. My time in the beautiful country of Kenya was lifechanging and after returning to the United States, before I could even say anything to my friends and family, they could already see on my face that I would soon be returning to the place that became so precious in my heart. One year later, I am back in Naivasha with the Panua program and it has been about a month since my arrival. In that month, I must admit it has not been the easiest adjustment, but I have seen God so clearly each and every day.

Throughout my first week in Naivasha, I spent time with a group of missioners made up of Elevate high school students and their parents. What left me in awe and showed me God’s presence so clearly was the speed at which these young people were able to cross personal, physical, and cultural barriers to truly connect and relate with the Panua youth. The Panua youth are some of the most vulnerable individuals on this earth yet they live each day with abounding joy. It was truly a privilege to experience our trippers first times in Kenya meeting the youth, seeing giraffes, and taking in all the scenery.

As the team left, I stayed behind to remain for the next 3 months working with Panua Partners in Hope. I’ve sat through meetings, talked about goals, worked through logistics, and arranged schedules, but I always find the most joy in collecting stories. Last year, I spent hours every week taking pictures and learning about the stories our youth carry with them. This summer, one year further into the program, I can see astounding changes in the positivity, confidence, and pride our youth exhibit. 365 days ago, I met a young man about my age from the Kamere group who – even though he towers above me – slouched his shoulders over, directed his eyes downward, never showed a smile, and rarely spoke a single word. I assumed this man, Agrey, did not speak English, but to my surprise, I came back this year to meet a whole new person. Agrey stands tall, smiles wide, and speaks English as well as I do. Within one year, God has used Panua Partners in Hope to change Agrey’s life, give him confidence, help him grow in his faith, and renew hope. God’s love is so incredible that not only has Agrey’s life changed entirely, the lives of the 200 other Panua youth are changing and growing every single day.

People who have heard me speak about Panua and Naivasha know that this place and these people have a permanent and special place in my life. It’s stories like Agrey’s that renew my love for this place and this program daily. I have shared my calling with anyone who will listen, I rave about the joy in this place, and I let the world know that my heart will always be in Naivasha, but it seems as if I have made my experiences sound like all fun and games when in fact, being here comes with its own set of difficulties. I struggle daily with language and cultural differences. I find myself isolated even though I am amongst many. I miss my family, my friends, my bed, my bath tub, my food. I miss having 5 different Starbucks options within 2 miles from my home. I miss the simple connections of phone data and text messaging. I miss the comfort I find in my speed talking English that no one here can understand. I miss the freedom of hopping in my car to drive anywhere I’d like, and I miss not being seen as different, someone who is out of place, someone who doesn’t belong.

You see, here in Naivasha, being a white girl draws extreme attention. Every child who passes screams “MZUNGU!!!!!” to call the other children to look and stare at the color of my skin. Even high schoolers and adults will whisper or even bluntly call me “mzungu” to my face. It’s not meant in a hurtful way, it just points out that I am different. While being different is difficult and presents new struggles each day, I also see God using these struggles to grow my heart and faith. Although I miss fitting in, God has shown me a new appreciation for those who feel left out or misunderstood. Instead of feeling as if I have been pointed out, I choose to look at the joy on the faces of young children who are so eager to greet me with “How are you? How are you?” When I think about missing my car and freedom, I feel thankful that I do not have to walk miles each day to reach water, food, or work. When I feel upset that my English speaking is difficult to understand, I feel grateful that I grew up in a place where education is free to everyone and no child is left at home because of a lack of funds. While I miss my phone, I simultaneously bask in the silence of disconnecting and the beauty that God places right in front of our faces every day, we simply miss it because we don’t take time to look. When I find myself wanting to take a trip to Starbucks, I feel grateful that I get to have a cup of instant coffee every day. When I miss my home, I feel immense gratitude. Having a home at all is an extreme privilege that we take for granted daily. Many of our Panua youth live in conditions that you are unable to imagine and having this experience has opened my eyes to the appreciation we should all have towards something as simple as a roof over our heads, a floor on the ground, and a bed to sleep on. Lastly, when I miss my family and friends I feel the Lord covering me in blessings. Here in Kenya, lifesaving technology is not nearly as available, infection is not well controlled, accidents are more frequent, and death is a common part of everyday life. Even further, there are people in this world who have no connections to others who care for them and love them unconditionally. Though I still selfishly find times that I miss my family and friends, I thank the Lord that I have such people in my life, that I am making new friendships in Kenya, and that there are people who care about me.

God knows exactly what he is doing in my life and here with the Panua Partners in Hope program. I see God working through me daily and I find Him present in every area of life. Whether I see God in the joy of a precious baby toddling by right when I needed a splash of encouragement or in the renewed hope of the Panua youth sharing their testimonies, I know His hand is on my heart and in this place.Actually the only thing that Phentermine Online stops me is that thing.

I am continuously reminded of a certain verse which applies so clearly to my life, to the lives of the Panua youth, and to the lives of each and every single one of us:

“For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.” Jeremiah 29:11

When I find myself fretting over getting into medical school, missing home, struggling to move forward solving an issue with a youth, or feeling discontent in any way, I stop myself and almost laugh. There’s no need for worries, sorrow, fret, or struggle. God knows our life plans and I pray every day that he will guide me closer and closer to where I am meant to be. God has taken my hand and led me to Naivasha to make a difference in the lives of 200 vulnerable people through Panua Partners in Hope and I pray that you let Him guide you through the plans He has for you. This day and every day, be grateful for a God that loves us so well, let go of any fears or worries about the future, open your eyes to the little things you may be taking for granted, and know that 200 loving and joyful young people in Kenya pray for you every single day. Well, as long as I’m here, make that 201.

Much love,

Katie Cornelius

Communications Update

Earlier this Spring we announced several communications shifts and enhancements for our church family. Our communications lay team, the Coalition for Marketing and Communications, has been hard at work over the past several months working with ministries throughout FUMCWP.  Here are some of those exciting updates:

Recent Changes

This month you saw the first issue of our church-wide Monthly Newsletter. Each month we will have the newsletter printed and available in worship and around campus. Also, the newsletter is available digitally on our website. View our June newsletter here.

We have a couple of changes related to our bulletin. As we embrace the Monthly Newsletter, we shifted our bulletin to be a order of worship and will no longer contain announcements. A few members of our church family (and yes, we have the stats – just a few!), were active users of our FUMCWP app to reference the bulletin each Sunday. This June, we are shifting away from the monetary investment associated with the FUMCWP App as our family embraces the online community available through Realm! We are excited for all the ways this tool will impact our ministries. As we move forward with Realm, the digital copy of the bulletin will be available there. Look for more details on getting connected and logged in to Realm in the coming months.

Upcoming for Our Church Family

One of the goals – in short – that our team received from the Long-Range Planning team was to strength our church communications. Making some changes to our website fits within that goal and is a necessity for us. The first step we are taking is to update the navigation to make it easier to find information! Look for changes this fall.

With that being said, we are moving away from ministry-specific e-newsletters at the beginning of August. Currently we have two church-wide e-newsletters – Monday morning with announcements and Thursday at Three with ministry stories. These 2 e-newsletters will be the source of church-wide and ministry-specific news. We strongly encourage our entire vibrant family to subscribe to stay in engaged!

Want to join the team?

Wow, this is a lot of new and exciting work!

As you can see, the Coalition for Marketing and Communications is actively involved in the communications needs of FUMCWP and our ministries. With over 30 ministries and administrative teams, we are empowering our laity to use the communications talents and gifts that God has given them.

Serving on this team is another way to grow in your faith journey. If you are interested in becoming a Communications Ambassador and joining our lay team, please email Sarah Skidmore, Director of Marketing and Communications, at sarahs@fumcwp.org.

2018 Florida Annual Conference

June 7-9, Lakeland, FL
The 2018 Florida Annual Conference is just around the corner! The Annual Conference is a time when lay members and clergy from all the United Methodist churches in the Florida Conference gather for worship, fellowship, and to conduct the business of the church. It includes reports of past and ongoing work; adoption of future goals, programs and budgets; and ordination of clergy members as deacons and elders.
The Council of Bishops recently made a recommendation based on the work of the Commission on a Way Forward. This will be one of the topics of conversation at Conference. In Feb. 2019, a special General Conference called by the bishops in 2016 will be held to focus solely on the UMC’s positions on human sexuality.

Living into the Vision: A Dinner Event Review

Living into the Vision: A Dinner Event

Last Sunday, our church family gathered together off-sight for our Living into the Vision: A Dinner Event. It was a time of fellowship and community focused on dialogue regarding key opportunities for our church in the coming year.

Pastor David shared with our church family that, “Last year, I met with several hundred church members in home groups, 15 to 20 at a time.  During those gatherings, I shared some of the challenges I believed we were facing as a church.  And I listened to feedback.” Read more of his remarks from this impactful event regarding the four key opportunities our church is facing this year.

Unity Prayer

During the event, our time focused on the importance of unity within our vibrant family. Let us continue to direct our hearts towards unity by sharing a common prayer together:

Loving God,

We are grateful for this community with such a diversity of gifts and stories that make us who we are.

Keep our focus on the mission to make disciples of all people. Guide our hearts as we worship together, strengthen our relationships, and fortify our devotion to Christ-like service as a church family.

Allow us to embody unity as we move together to participate in God’s kingdom.

Remind us, God, that we are each a needed member of this church family and that we have an individual responsibility to respond to the calling you have placed in our lives.

Let us sense your grace and presence as we face the future together as a vibrant family.

Amen.

Communications Update

Communications Update

As we continue to live into our new vision launched this January, we understand that strengthened communication and collaboration across our church family is critical. Our new structure with the pillars and long-range planning goals are helping us achieve those goals.

Over the past several months, we have made several shifts and enhancements to our communication as a church family. Many of these changes involved behind-the-scenes processes, parameters, guidelines, etc. However, we want to share a few of the more visible updates:

  • Our Thursday at Three newsletter continues to be a tool for our church family to learn of the work that God is doing here at FUMCWP. This newsletter shares updates from pillars and ministries – but also sheds light into some of the strategic shifts and movements of our church family. Make sure to subscribe here.
  • We have developed a Marketing and Communications lay team that is actively involved in the communications needs of each of our ministries. With over 30 ministries and administrative teams, empowering our lay leaders to use the communications talents and gifts that God has given them is just one of the ways we are strengthening the communications work of this church. If you are interested in becoming a Communications Ambassador and joining our lay team, please email Sarah Skidmore, Director of Marketing and Communications, at sarahs@fumcwp.org.
  • You may have noticed the screen in the gym lobby. We are putting more of those screens up around our campus to keep everyone up to date on church happenings and relevant information. Look for more screens to be on campus this summer!

We have several more exciting communications updates coming this summer and fall through the work of the Marketing and Communications Lay Team (aka The Coalition for Marketing and Communications). Our efforts are strategically directed towards living into our vision and aiding all our ministries, leadership, and laity in embracing this new vision for our church.

Embracing the Vision: Spirit and Soul and Body

Spirit and Soul and Body

Thessalonica was one of the harbor cities where Paul led the development of the Early Church during his missionary travels. Timothy, one of Paul’s devoted mentees, later visited the church in the busy city to provide an update to Paul. From Timothy’s report, Paul wrote 1 Thessalonians as a letter to the believers in that context. Paul wrote of themes including Christian hope, Jesus’ coming, responsibility – and lives of comprehensive holiness. Paul closes the letter with instruction and exhortation to the Thessalonians.

“May the God of peace himself sanctify you entirely; and may your spirit and soul and body be kept sound and blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. The one who calls you is faithful and he will do this” (1 Thessalonians 5:23-24, NRSV).

Paul brings awareness of the human existence and how our entire lives are part of the sanctification process. With this in mind, our Health and Wholeness Ministry strives to help people achieve wholeness to live and serve fully as intended by God. Betsy McKeeby is our Parish Nurse – actually, our one and only – who has directed this ministry since 2003. This ministry started in partnership with several other health ministries in the Orlando community as “Our Whole Community.” Nearly 15 years later, our Health and Wholeness Ministry thrives while caring for our congregation through education, information, preventative measures, assistance, and spiritual support.

  • Whether you participated in the fall Move60 Challenge – or would like to participate in the next Move60 Challenge this March.
  • Whether you attend – or would like to start attending – our Monday, Wednesday, or Friday yoga sessions held here on campus.
  • Whether you attended the Mindful Living session on Gratitude this November – or would like to attend a Wellness Initiative about Knee Health on December 14th.

These are only a few of the countless initiatives our Health and Wholeness Ministry uses to live into our vision of a vibrant family built on God’s grace. “We use education and prevention to be proactive when it comes to our health. We don’t just respond to emergencies, but we provide healthy communities to encourage healing” says Betsy. “Our goal is to have folks well – we want you well!”

Move60 Challenge

The Move60 Challenge is a program we participate in through Healthy Central Florida. It’s a MOVEment to encourage activity as we strive to become healthier communities. Our Health and Wholeness Ministry gets a team together as a part of the faith community segment of program. “Nov. 29 was the end of this particular challenge and we are excited to see how we end up ranking. We’ve won the past 2 times and with the prize money we were able to update the AED’s across our church campus” says Betsy. Check out this feature on our team from Healthy Central Florida.

The Move60 Challenge is based on being physically active 60 days and being sure activity is recorded weekly. Whether it is walking, running, biking, etc. – participants are encouraged to start moving and stick to it! Look for more information on joining our team in 2018 for the March edition.

Yoga at Church

Did you know we offer yoga at the church? Meeting people where they are at, we offer a Gentle Yoga program as well as a Multi-Level class throughout the week. Whether you are interested in getting a yoga session in after you drop your little one off at MSEE for the morning and are in need of some orthopedic prevention, we have a class for you. Click here for the current schedule.

Embracing Gratitude During Advent

Our Mindful Living Initiative hosted a night session focused on Gratitude just before Thanksgiving. It was a great reminder to set our hearts towards a focus on gratitude and thankfulness as we enter the season of Advent where we prepare our hearts for the birth of Christ. This Gratitude session is just one in a series of sessions that allow us to focus on mindfulness, meditation, activity, and reflection.

I had a hard 2 days in a row; it was unreal and 100%. I bought 15 pills of Viagra at the best price. It was enough for me.

Interested in joining the Health & Wholeness Ministry

Move60, yoga, and the Gratitude night barely touch the surface of all the activities of this ministry. We understand that part of the faith journey is serving the Lord with the gifts and graces He has blessed each of us with. Whether you want to learn about maintaining your heart or preventing your health problems. Let Betsy know – betsy.mckeeby@gmail.com.

Embracing the Vision: Call of Intentionality

“I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink”

The Diversity Ministry is a relatively new ministry to our church family and born out of the recent home meetings with Pastor David. At every home meeting, a church member raised the request to intentionally increase our church’s diversity. We heard this request and formed a lay team to support this ministry. Under the guidance of Pastor David, Annette Snedaker leads this ministry and how we can passionately seek Matthew 25:31-46. This call from the Gospel according to Matthew is heavy on the hearts of this ministry team.

The Diversity Ministry meets monthly to strategize how to broaden the reach of our vibrant family and further grow into serving in the image of Jesus the Christ.

In November, Forum – one of our adult Sunday school classes – asked Annette to share with the class updates from this ministry. This is just one more example of how we are strengthening our connections and engaging one another across ministries as one vibrant family. At the heart of this Sunday morning discussion was a time of acceptance and curiosity:

  • Honest storytelling
  • Overview of the Diversity Ministry
  • Vibrant dialogue

Drawing from Steven Covey’s book, “The Speed of Trust,” one of the first objectives the diversity ministry emphasizes is to always build trust – build trust between those engaged in the movement. Before we bridge into any unchartered territory – geographically, economically, or culturally – we must first build bridges between one another.

Call of Intentionality

Let’s join the Diversity Ministry in investigating what this call of intentionality and inclusive perspective means in our daily lives.

Matthew 25:31-46 – New Revised Standard Version

31 “When the Son of Man comes in his glory, and all the angels with him, then he will sit on the throne of his glory. 32 All the nations will be gathered before him, and he will separate people one from another as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats, 33 and he will put the sheep at his right hand and the goats at the left. 34 Then the king will say to those at his right hand, ‘Come, you that are blessed by my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world; 35 for I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed me, 36 I was naked and you gave me clothing, I was sick and you took care of me, I was in prison and you visited me.’ 37 Then the righteous will answer him, ‘Lord, when was it that we saw you hungry and gave you food, or thirsty and gave you something to drink? 38 And when was it that we saw you a stranger and welcomed you, or naked and gave you clothing? 39 And when was it that we saw you sick or in prison and visited you?’ 40 And the king will answer them, ‘Truly I tell you, just as you did it to one of the least of these who are members of my family, you did it to me.’ 41 Then he will say to those at his left hand, ‘You that are accursed, depart from me into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels; 42 for I was hungry and you gave me no food, I was thirsty and you gave me nothing to drink, 43 I was a stranger and you did not welcome me, naked and you did not give me clothing, sick and in prison and you did not visit me.’ 44 Then they also will answer, ‘Lord, when was it that we saw you hungry or thirsty or a stranger or naked or sick or in prison, and did not take care of you?’ 45 Then he will answer them, ‘Truly I tell you, just as you did not do it to one of the least of these, you did not do it to me.’ 46 And these will go away into eternal punishment, but the righteous into eternal life.”

Embracing the Vision: Sharing God’s Word in the Nursery!

Sharing God’s Word in the Nursery!

Children’s ministry is a critical way that we at FUMCWP reach families and the younger generation. You may not have realized that—even before Noah’s Ark and Promiseland begin—our kids are learning of the Bible and God’s work at a young age in the Nursery. “The Nursery too is a learning place, a place where the Word of God is written on the hearts of our little ones through both word and song,” says Dawn Peterson, Nursery/Noah’s Ark Supervisor.

Foundations of Discipleship

During the Contemporary Service on Sunday mornings, our 2-3 years olds engage with a Bible study that exposes them to the love of God. This Fall our little ones studied David. In particular, they learned of the story of David and how “God can help me.”

  • God can help me anywhere.
  • God can help me do anything.
  • God can help me do hard things.
  • God can help me help others.
  • We can praise God because He helps us.

From a developmental standpoint, starting this type of discipleship at a young age exposes the children to a setting of learning, helps to build a routine within their lives, and prepares them for entering into the Noah’s Ark program. Dawn continues, “We are excited to have lively and hands-on Nursery workers who have a real passion for sharing discipleship with our children.”

Serving Other Ministries

The Nursery is a unique ministry. In addition to the learning the occurs during the Sunday service, the Nursery provides childcare on weeknights and for special events so that our other ministries may thrive. As adults are serving the church through various avenues—whether it’s an adult morning ministry, during Wednesday Night Live, or in leadership classes, etc.,—the nursery allows for focused work in these other initiatives, knowing their children are being lovingly cared for.

Using Technology to Ease the Transition

As we work to expand the Nursery ministry, one of the recent updates includes an electronic check-in system. Moving away from the physical sign-in sheets, we now offer a security system that allows for mobile check-ins through a phone or iPad. The benefit to our little ones here is the ease of transition into the Nursery setting. No longer are there lines and wait times and this reduces the anxiety these 2-3 year olds have. Logistically speaking, parents are provided a security code through the mobile check-in and a label is placed on the back of the child. “This is just one example of the intentionality we have within the Nursery ministry to provide a safe, loving place to begin sharing the Word of God,” says Dawn.
