When Helping Hurts: The Small Group Experience

When Helping Hurts offers a different framework for thinking about poverty and its alleviation. Rather than simply defining it as a lack of material things, this video series addresses the roots of the issue: broken relationships with God, self, others, and the rest of creation.

Join us for a 7-week small group experience led by Victoria Vaden, our Director of Community Service  & Outreach. Six weeks of study will include a video series, questions, and discussion. We will also spend one class session serving our community. The series is a powerful reminder of how to love each other, how to give and receive, and how to serve each other in a way that lifts everyone up, honoring our God-given dignity and respect.

Unit 1: Reconsidering the Meaning of Poverty
Unit 2: Seeing God at Work
Unit 3: Why Good Intentions Aren’t Enough
Unit 4: Joining God’s Work
Unit 5: Fostering Change
Unit 6: Moving Forward

You will receive a confirmation email upon registration. If you do not receive a confirmation email, please contact Victoria Vaden at victoriav@fumcwp.org.

Church, Community, & Visioning on the Labyrinth

Rollins College’s Dean of Religious Life and Chaplain, Katrina Jenkins will introduce the FUMCWP community to the process of setting intentions, while walking the labyrinth.  This ancient contemplative practice will help us to cultivate the transformative energy needed to weave a colorful tapestry towards a beloved community.

This event is facilitated by the Diversity, Equity & Inclusion Committee. We hope to see you there!

Cinnabar Film Series: First Cow

Cinnabar is a monthly film series designed around hospitality and curiosity. FILMS engage our full selves. They inspire, reveal, challenge, question, and enchant us. Cinnabar was born as a micro-ministry project of Kinfolk Young Adult Ministry and is still connected to our church in that way.

What do we do? Whenever we gather, the first thing we do is share food and drinks. Our host then offers an introduction and invitation to the film they chose and we watch together, whether under the stars or in front of a twenty-foot wall. Finally, we circle up to reflect together. Our one rule is we never say a film was good or bad; we just talk about the impressions it made on us.

Coming up on October 12th: First Cow

“Some people can’t imagine being stolen from.”

We’re looking forward to continuing Cinnabar Fall with André’s selection of the 2019 film First Cow by Kelly Reichardt. Here’s why he wanted to share it:

I notoriously have a negative gut-reaction toward period piece films. They remind me of my high school history teacher putting on an outdated VHS when he couldn’t be bothered. So, naturally, I was apprehensive when I pressed play on First Cow.

But from the very first frame, one thing stuck to me: an insatiable curiosity. I have found few films that have made me lean in, root for, and wonder more than this one. It’s probably not what you think it will be, and yet, it might just envelop you as well.

If that doesn’t sell you, you don’t know Cinnabar. Come be surprised with us at Ligature Coffee, just look for our new fancy signs.

Cinnabar Film Series: If Beale Street Could Talk

Cinnabar is a monthly film series designed around hospitality and curiosity. FILMS engage our full selves. They inspire, reveal, challenge, question, and enchant us. Cinnabar was born as a micro-ministry project of Kinfolk Young Adult Ministry and is still connected to our church in that way.

Coming up on September 14th: If Beale Steet Could Talk

“If you’ve trusted love this far, don’t panic now. Trust it all the way.”

David Witwer, Kinfolk Lay Leader, is excited to share If Beale Street Could Talk with Cinnabar and here’s why:

I first saw this film a few years ago, but I remember watching it like it was yesterday. It is poetic cinema through and through—evocative and lyrical and vibrant. It’s an important film for the ways it features and celebrates Black characters and stories. But its particularity is also transcendent as it dances between the realms of ordinary and extraordinary, even sacred. And it’s a pretty stunning journey into the paradox of the immense beauty and immense tragedy in our world.
Note: This film is intended for adults and contains scenes of sexuality, racially-motivated violence, and explicit language.

We’re once again at Ligature Coffee, which is a brown building with our new signs out front!
