DEI Doc Night: Resisting Christian Nationalism

Join our church’s DEI Ministry and the Interfaith Council of Central Florida for a powerful public forum on resisting Christian nationalism. We will screen the film God & Country, which was released this year and features interviews with experts on religious freedom and violence like William Barber II, Simone Campbell, Russell Moore, Jemar Tisby, David French, and Kristin Kobes du Mez. Following the film, David B. Witwer will moderate a conversation about Christian nationalism in Central Florida and the possibilities of Christian and interfaith resistance rooted in love.

Our panel will consist of Rabbi David Kay, Chair of the Interfaith Council of Central Florida and Adjunct Professor at Rollins College, Rev. Dr. Sharon Austin, Director of Justice Ministries and District Superintendent of the United Methodist Church (FL Conference), and David Williamson, the co-founder of the Central Florida Freethought Community. NOTE: Our panel will no longer feature Rev. Dr. James T. Morris, who was unable to join us for personal reasons.

Please arrive at 6:15pm to allow for a prompt programming start at 6:30pm. DEI Doc Night will be hosted at Credo Conduit, just north of Downtown Orlando. Accessible parking, lot parking, and street parking will all be available and a parking map will be provided to registrants before the event. This event is intended for a mature audience, which could include discerning high school students. Childcare will not be available.

Free registration is required, and this event is open to the public. Please bring friends, family, and neighbors to this important conversation as we seek to be responsible people of faith in the public square.

Cost of Poverty Experience (COPE)

Our Youth Ministry invites you to the Cost of Poverty Experience, a chance to walk in someone else’s shoes and reflect on the experience as it relates to your own life and community. COPE is an experience that moves participants beyond stereotypes to a more holistic understanding of the drivers and results of poverty. The nature of this experience helps organizations and communities more deeply understand the complexities of poverty, paving the way to address the issues more comprehensively.

COPE will kick off the 2024 Youth SOUL Week, a time for our youth to spend in fellowship with one another while Serving Orlando with Unconditional Love.

Family Movie Night

Join us on July 21 for our Summer Family Movie Night. All ages are invited to the gym at 5pm to watch the movie Kung Fu Panda 4 and hear how that relates to our worship sermon series themes! Dress comfortably and bring blankets, pillows, camp chairs. Pizza, popcorn, and drinks will be provided, but please RSVP so we can plan accordingly.

Join us for a Church Conference on Tuesday, June 17 at 6pm in the Fellowship Hall. The purpose of this conference is to address Pastor compensation.

DEI Book Study: The Flag and the Cross

Study Dates:
June 3, 17
July 1, 15, 29

Barbara Thompson will once again lead our DEI summer book study! This year we are picking up The Flag and the Cross, a 2022 sociological study of white Christian nationalism. As concerned Christians, we recognize that strains of this deeply troubling movement are all around us—in our country, our churches, our families, and possibly even within ourselves. The Flag and the Cross offers insight and articulation into what exactly white Christian nationalism is and how it contrasts with the gospel of Christ, while offering tools to skillfully resist it. At the same time, we recognize that our political work as Christians is grounded in Christ’s call to love our political enemies.

This study will be offered virtually on Zoom from 7–8:30PM on alternating Mondays. We welcome participants from around the country, but do ask that each new guest be invited by a participating church member (or previous book study alum).

Please register and secure your copy of this profound book today. The first assignment will go out on May 24th and include preliminary reading and video content. Please send any questions about this study to us at DEI@fumcwp.org.

Cinnabar: Arrival | The 50th Screening!

Cinnabar is a monthly film series designed around hospitality and curiosity. Films engage our full selves. They inspire, reveal, challenge, question, and enchant us. Our church’s Kinfolk young adult ministry sponsors Cinnabar as a form of spiritual creativity in our Orlando community.

What do we do? First, we share a meal and reconnect with each other. Our host then offers an introduction and invitation to the film they’ve chosen and we watch together in a warm and welcoming space. After, we circle up to reflect together. Our one rule is we never say a film was good or bad; we just talk about the impressions it made on us.

Cinnabar Film series is celebrating 50 screenings!! Started in 2018 in the Marcy Chapel, Cinnabar continues to be sponsored by Kinfolk and the church. We’re showing Arrival on May 15th and throwing a party! Tickets are $15 for a pre-show dinner with catering and coffee drinks by Downtown CREDO.

Come at 6 for dinner or 7 for the free film and discussion.

Find out more on Instagram @cinnabarfilm or grab a ticket today on Eventbrite below.

Solidarity Labyrinth Walk

Our DEI Ministry invites you to join a Solidarity Labyrinth Walk to pray for and encourage LGBTQ Delegates and Methodists while General Conference is in session. We will write prayers, journal and reflect, and walk the labyrinth as a way to walk alongside and hold in prayer those whose future in the Methodist church is up for debate. Recognizing past and present harms, we nevertheless gather together to pray for healing, wholeness, and full inclusion in the future.

Join us at 10am on Saturday, April 27th at Colonialtown Square Park’s public labyrinth, which honors the 49 Pulse victims. DEI is pleased to offer this walk in collaboration with Rev. Peter Gaughan. In addition to shaping young imaginations, Peter is a graduate of Candler School of Theology and the Shalem Spiritual Guidance Program. He enjoys working as a Spiritual Director with small groups and individuals, creating space for deep listening and connection.

Free registration is requested, but walk ups are welcome. Colonialtown Square Park is located at 820 N Fern Creek Ave (6 blocks south of the Reeves Center). Street parking is available on Park Lake Street or Illinois Street. The labyrinth is accessible from Park Lake Street.
