Pet Blessing Community Celebration 2023

Black History Month Film: Standing on My Sister’s Shoulders

Join us in the Reeves Center Fellowship Hall on February 27th as we celebrate Black History Month through film, food, and conversation. We will gather as a community to learn about and honor leaders of the Civil Rights Movement, particularly women leaders in Mississippi, through the film Standing on My Sister’s Shoulders. We will also screen the powerful short film Otis’ Dream, a retelling of Otis Moss’ journey to register for his sacred right to vote in 1940s Georgia.

Together, these films bear witness to how America and American Christianity have been fundamentally shaped by Black people, and examine ways that Black faith connects the civic and spiritual. Snacks and desserts will be offered at 6:30pm and a discussion will follow our feature presentation at 8:30pm.

While we recognize there are many wonderful ways to celebrate Black History Month in our community, this event is open to all. Note that these films deal with mature subjects, but are appropriate for teenagers.

From the makers of Standing on My Sister’s Shoulders:

In 1965, when three women walked into the US House of Representatives in Washington D.C., they had come a very long way. Neither lawyers nor politicians, they were ordinary women from Mississippi, and descendants of African slaves. They had come to their country’s capital seeking civil rights, the first black women to be allowed in the senate chambers in nearly 100 years. A missing chapter in our nation’s record of the Civil Rights movement, this powerful documentary reveals the movement in Mississippi in the 1950’s and 60’s from the point of view of the courageous women who lived it – and emerged as its grassroots leaders.

Presented by the Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion ministry of First UMC Winter Park.

Enrichment Workshop: Setting Boundaries with Teens

The 4 Pillars counselors have been hard at work helping address the needs of their individual clients. And now it’s time for the Center to expand into the ‘Enrichment’ portion of the title, with a series of offerings for church members, friends and community members.

Join us for our first Enrichment Workshop on Setting Healthy Boundaries with Teens, presented by Lisa Sojourner and Molly Dawkins. Lisa is a Licensed Mental Health Counselor with more than 10 years of experience counseling teens and their families. Additionally, she has worked with teens within the school system. Molly Dawkins, who is a Registered Mental Health Counselor Intern, also works with teens (as well as adults) to help foster healthy relationships.

Don’t miss hearing from this well-seasoned team at the Reeves Center on March 21! You will receive encouragement, learn communication skills and better understand the young people in your life. You will find it quite, well…ENRICHING!

We will need a total of 8 registrants to proceed with this course. Please make sure to sign up at the link below.

Cinnabar Film Series: Kajillionaire

Cinnabar is a monthly film series designed around hospitality and curiosity. Films engage our full selves. They inspire, reveal, challenge, question, and enchant us. Our church’s Kinfolk young adult ministry sponsors Cinnabar as a form of spiritual creativity in our Orlando community.

What do we do? First, we share snacks, drinks, and reconnect with each other. Our host then offers an introduction and invitation to the film they’ve chosen and we watch together in a warm and welcoming space. After, we circle up to reflect together. Our one rule is we never say a film was good or bad; we just talk about the impressions it made on us.

Coming up on February 15th: Kajillionaire
Welcome to February at Cinnabar! This month’s host Emiley wrote the following about her selection:

I chose Kajillionaire because it makes me laugh, scratch my head, and practice empathy in new ways every time I watch it. It takes a deep plunge into family dynamics, death and rebirth, and the search for connection—all while delighting the senses with beautiful shots, humor, absurdity, and a hefty dose of petty crimes. Above all, I love the way this film explores how intimacy forms and transforms us. I can’t wait to discuss it with you all!

NOTE: This film is intended for adults only.

We’ll be back at  Ligature Coffee, just look for our signs! 6:30 for snacks and chats, film starts about 7pm. Tickets are available below as a way to donate to the cause, but registration is not required.

Preschool Playdate

Families with little ones (birth-5yrs) are invited to join us for a Preschool Playdate on April 15 from 9-11am! We will gather in the gym for breakfast, inflatables, and games.

This will be an informal time of play and connection with other families. Parents should stay for this event to join in on the fun. Please bring a breakfast item or drinks to share.

Cost is $5 per family to cover some of the cost of our inflatables.

Reception for Matt Kuzma!

Our church family has truly been blessed by the presence of Matt Kuzma, who has served as our Chief Operations Officer since June of 2019. His diligence and dedication to our staff and congregation have made our operations more seamless, transparent, and effective. Matt continues to demonstrate a heart for God and servant leadership, and for that we are deeply grateful.

Join us for a reception as we celebrate his time with us and wish him well in his upcoming retirement!

On January 29, we will have 2 opportunities for you to say farewell:

1) Following the 9am Contemporary Service  – We will have coffee available at the back of the Gym for a time of fellowship and celebration.

2) Following the 11am Traditional Service from 12-1pm – We will have a reception in the Fellowship Hall with light refreshments. Come celebrate Matt and share your gratitude for his service and commitment to our church family!

We hope to see you there!
