“For we are what he has made us, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand to be our way of life.” -Ephesians 2:10
Our church is committed to outreach, sharing ourselves and our resources locally and globally. Outreach is a wonderful expression of our love toward others as we seek to help transform lives. First UMC Winter Park is in ministry to provide food for the hungry, housing for the homeless and compassion to all God’s people in many different ways.
How will you use your prayers, presence, gifts and service this week?
South Street Ministry
A ministry of our church located (yes, you guessed it!) on South Street, just east of the core of downtown Orlando. The community in which South Street Ministry is located is diverse in many senses of that term: race, culture, socioeconomic status, sexual orientation, age, and marital status.
At South Street Ministry we’ve gone into a long-established, slowly changing existing community and taken on a decades old facility for a church. We’re building a new community of faith, centered in worship, which seeks to draw from the diversity of its surroundings and address the myriad of needs of folks in the larger community within which the facility sits.
- Mentoring for Academic Success (MAP) is a core program of South Street Ministry serving children of low-income families from neighboring Hillcrest and Lake Como Elementary Schools. MAP works with children on academic assignments Monday through Thursdays, with Fridays offering art, music, drama and dance, chess and other activities as a reward for working hard during the week. Volunteers from FUMCWP mentor children, provide bus transportation from school to South Street Ministry, and then deliver each child safely to their home.

Local Outreach Initiatives
Street Eats Bags
Feeding the hungry is a cornerstone of the Christian faith and we approach it simply here at First UMC Winter Park. Grab a bag filled with non-perishable food and share the love of Christ by giving the bag to anyone you may see on the streets struggling with homelessness or hunger. Pick up a Street Eats bag every Sunday morning.
The Military Outreach Ministry of First UMC Winter Park seeks to bless currently deployed members of the Armed Services and their families with our prayers and support. The ministry sends care packages to these brave men and women, and reaches out to their families to identify ways to support them.
Soul to Sole
Collecting pairs of gently worn running shoes in adult sizes, we are working with area agencies, schools and organizations to help provide shoes to those in need.
We take donated children’s bicycles and give them a new life. Lovingly refurbished bicycles, along with a helmet and lock, are given to children so they may have transportation and recreation opportunities.
Interfaith Hospitality Network
The Interfaith Hospitality Network (IHN) is a coalition of congregations that support struggling, homeless families and they seek to return to a stable life. The church provides volunteers, overnight accommodations, and meals for three or four homeless families with children for one week at a time several times each year. Volunteer roles include: greeters, overnight hosts, providing meals, stocking the pantry so families can pack their own lunches, laundry..and simply a compassionate caring friend.
The Jobs Partnership
Our church participates in the Jobs Partnership Suited for Success event, and in 2012 grew our commitment by sponsoring the first Winter Park 12-week class with partner All Saints church. The success of The Jobs Partnership of Florida is attributed to the grace of God and the dedication of volunteers willing to help equip, empower and transform individuals who are under-employed or unemployed. Mentors and job counselors are needed for each 12-week session along with hospitality volunteers.
Throughout the year we have many opportunities to deploy a team of passionate servants or “doers” to assist a variety of local agencies and organizations to help those in need. From food drives to ramp building, church members respond to God’s call to love one another.
