People: Now the Son of Man has been glorified, and God has been glorified in him.

Pastor: Remember the Passover of the Lord, which made time and history new for God’s people.

People: Now the Son of Man has been glorified, and God has been glorified in him.

Pastor: Remember Jesus’ commandment to live a new way, loving one another as he has loved us.

People: Now the Son of Man has been glorified, and God has been glorified in him.

Pastor: Remember the bread broken and given, the cup of new allegiance with God.

People: Now the Son of Man has been glorified, and God has been glorified in him.

Pastor: God’s beloved in Jesus Christ, God has given us everything!

People: Come and worship. We belong to Jesus. We are his own. Amen.

Opening Prayer: Pastor David (1 Corinthians 11, John 13)

Holy God who holds nothing back to draw us to yourself, be with us as we tell the story of Jesus sharing a final meal with his friends before his death. Nurture us as we repeat the sacred words used since the beginning of your Church. We will bless bread and cup in remembrance of Jesus, who gave himself for us and calls us to a new life of love.

On this Holy Thursday, may we know the mystery of time past, present, and future–time met together in your gracious love. We celebrate your saving presence told in stories throughout human history. We hear your commandment, always new and urgent, to make our love for one another the sign of who we are as your people now. Eating the bread and drinking the cup of your grace, we proclaim our hope in the eternal feast where all will gather in love at your table.

May we hold nothing back as we enter together into this holy time. Amen.

PROCLAMATION & RESPONSE

Song: “Be Thou My Vision” | Sofia Fernandez & Olivia Friendly

Be Thou my Vision, O Lord of my heart
Naught be all else to me, save that Thou art
Thou my best Thought, by day or by night
Waking or sleeping, Thy presence my light

Be Thou my Wisdom, and Thou my true Word
I ever with Thee and Thou with me, Lord
Thou my great Father, I Thy true son
Thou in me dwelling, and I with Thee one

Riches I heed not, nor man’s empty praise
Thou mine Inheritance, now and always
Thou and Thou only, first in my heart
High King of heaven, my Treasure Thou art

High King of heaven, my victory won
May I reach heaven’s joys, O bright heaven’s Sun
Heart of my own heart, whatever befall
Still be my Vision, O Ruler of all

Prayer of Yearning: Pastor Philip (Psalm 116, 1 Corinthians 11, John 13)

Pastor: Jesus, even as we enter the heartbreak and anguish of Holy Week, we know that we do not fully understand what God has done for us.

People: You have loosed our bonds. What shall we return to you for all we have received?

Pastor: Sometimes we follow rituals but miss their meaning. Sometimes we say the words but forget to love.

People: May God help us pay our vows in the presence of all God’s people.

Pastor:Jesus, washing the feet of your friends, you ask: “Do you know what I have done for you?”

People: May God help us to serve one another in love as you have served us.

Pastor: Jesus, breaking the bread and blessing the cup, you ask: “Do you know what I have done for you?”

People: May God help us eat and drink in remembrance of you.

Pastor: Jesus, commanding us to love one another, you ask: “Do you know what I have done for you?”

People:We love God, who hears our every supplication. We call on the name of the Lord.

Words of Assurance: Pastor Philip (Psalm 116, John 13)

God always hears us. We call on God as long as we live, sure of God’s love. Jesus loves those who are his own, loving them till the end. Know that you are God’s own beloved in Jesus Christ.

Scripture Reading: John 13:1-17, 31b-35

Homily: Pastor Philip

Song: “For Everyone Born” | Sofia Fernandez & Olivia Friendly

For everyone born, a place at the table, for everyone born, clean water and bread, a shelter, a space, a safe place for growing, for everyone born, a star overhead,

Refrain: and God will delight when we are creators of justice and joy, compassion and peace: yes, God will delight when we are creators of justice, justice and joy!

For young and for old, a place at the table, a voice to be heard, a part in the song, the hands of a child in hands that are wrinkled, for young and for old, the right to belong, (Refrain)

For everyone born, a place at the table, to live without fear, and simply to be, to work, to speak out, to witness and worship, for everyone born, the right to be free, (Refrain)

THANKSGIVING & COMMUNION

Poem: “And the Table Will Be Wide” by Jan Richardson | Pastor Leah

And the table will be wide. And the welcome will be wide. And the arms will open wide to gather us in. And our hearts will open wide to receive.

And we will come as children who trust there is enough. And we will come unhindered and free. And our aching will be met with bread. And our sorrow will be met with wine.

And we will open our hands to the feast without shame. And we will turn toward each other without fear.

And we will give up our appetite for despair. And we will taste and know of delight.

And we will become bread for a hungering world. And we will become drink for those who thirst. And the blessed will become the blessing. And everywhere will be the feast.

Invitation to Communion: 1 Corinthians 11

Pastor: On Holy Thursday we remember Jesus’ last meal with his friends, and we look ahead to the next two days when we will remember the Passion and the tomb. Help us to do more than simply remember these events.

Help us to live them here and now as your own people—people Jesus loves now and to the end.

May this Holy Thursday be a day of remembrance.

People: We celebrate it as a festival to our God.

The Great Thanksgiving: 1 Corinthians 11

Pastor: The Lord be with you.

People: And also with you.

Pastor: Come to the mountain of the Lord.

People: We come to see God’s glory.

Pastor: Lift up your hearts.

People: We lift them up to the Lord.

Pastor: Let us give thanks to the Lord, our God.

People: It is right to give our thanks and praise.

Pastor: It is right, and a good and joyful thing, always and everywhere, to give thanks to you, almighty God, creator of all things in heaven and on earth.

When the earth was formless and void, you brought light to the darkness and order to the primordial chaos. From mere clay, you fashioned us in your image, and breathed into our lifeless bodies the breath of your life-giving Spirit. When we wandered off and lost our way, you sent prophets and teachers to show us where we had gone astray. In the fullness of time, you sent your Son, Jesus Christ, to become living water and heavenly food for our very souls.

Even at the moment of his darkest hour, when the forces of darkness conspired to end his life, and his disciples were about to fall away, Jesus offered himself as the bread of heaven and the cup of our salvation. And even when we fall away today, Christ continues to be for us the bread of heaven and the cup of our salvation.

And so, with your people on earth, and all the company of heaven, we praise your name and join their unending hymn, saying:

People: Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might, heaven and earth are full of your glory. Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is the one who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest.

Pastor: Holy are you, and blessed is the bread of heaven, Christ Jesus. When you sent Christ to be with us, he offered his very self, that we might have the strength to stand when all hope seems lost. Through the holy mystery of this table, we are invited into your presence, tended to in our brokenness, and strengthened in our weakness.

With joy and gratitude, we remember that night in which Jesus took the bread, broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying:

“Take, eat, this is the bread of life, given for you. Do this in remembrance of me.”

After supper, Jesus took the cup, blessed it and gave it to his disciples, saying:

“Drink from this, all of you. This is my life in a new covenant, poured out for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me.”

And so, in remembrance of these, your mighty acts of love and grace, we offer ourselves in praise and thanksgiving. As your covenant people in union with Christ’s spirit, and as reflections of your glory, we proclaim the mystery of faith:

People: Christ has died. Christ is risen. Christ will come again

Prayer of Consecration: 1 Corinthians 11

Pour out your Holy Spirit on us, that we might be servants of others, even as Jesus was a servant to his disciples and to those in need.

Pour out your Holy Spirit on these gifts of bread and wine, that they may be for us the life and love of Christ; and that we may be for the world the body of Christ, redeemed by your gracious love.

By your Spirit, make us one with Christ, one with each other, and one in ministry to the world. In Christ’s name, we pray. Amen.

Giving the Bread and Cup

Communion by intinction.

Song: “Your Love Is All Around Me” | Sofia Fernandez & Olivia Friendly

Before existence had a name, You were there
There when the world was without frame, You were there

Your love has been, and is, and always will be
Your love is all around me

Here in the sacred and the everyday, You are there
When temporary fades away, You’ll be there

From the mountain high, to the valley low
Everywhere I go, Your love is all around me
From the breath of life, to the grave below
This truth I hold, Your love is all around me

SENDING FORTH

Closing Prayer: Pastor Philip

Benediction: Jeremiah 31

Pastor: In the name of God the Father, to whom Jesus knew he was going as he faced his Passion; in the name of Jesus, who loved his ownwho were in the world and loved them to the end; in the name of the Holy Spirit, who gives us the power to fulfill Jesus’ commandment that we love as he loves, let us go forth to walk with Jesus to his cross.
