In the fall of 1997 the ladies of Hannah held their first children’s consignment sale. The sale took place the same weekend as the Methodist School Fall Festival and sales are reported to have been approximately $1,600. Twenty years later Hannah’s Closet has become an annual event that is anticipated among parents and grandparents in the Winter Park community. The systems and processes have evolved over the years, but the mission of the sale remains the same – to serve women and children in the Winter Park community and beyond.
Hannah is a community of mothers of school aged children and younger, who gather monthly at FUMC for service, socialization, and spiritual development. As a group, we support and encourage each other while learning and growing together in our Christian faith. Our main fundraiser is Hannah’s Closet.
Hannah’s Closet takes place once a year and is generally held in February in the MFLC. We collect items for three days and the sale is on Friday and Saturday. The sale is a consignment sale, and consignors earn 60% of the sales price for the items they contribute to the sale. While the consignors of the first sale were primarily members of Hannah, this year’s sale had 178 consignors; 70% of whom are not members of First United Methodist Church of Winter Park.
Our sales this year were over $32,000. With volunteers staffing the event and keeping costs at a minimum, our profits from the sale after paying the consignors were over $11,000. From the proceeds, we give 10% back to the church and then have the remaining money to use for mission work. In the past, Hannah has supported Covenant House, First United Methodist Children’s Home, Panua, local elementary schools, Family Promise, and more. Our mission is to support organizations who serve women and children.
In addition to the money received at the sale, we also have the opportunity to serve local families. This year we gave vouchers totaling more than $700 for local families to come and shop for free. We were also able to donate many unsold items to the Boys and Girls Club and One Heart for Women and Children.
